Gospel-Centered Church Planting to reach the unchurched 99% in Japan.

Preaching at Otawara Christ Church

A few weeks ago we were told about a church a few hours north of here (a little less than halfway to our old home in Iwate Prefecture) where one of the pastors in our association has planted two churches in addition to the church he has been pastoring. This makes for a very busy Sunday of travel for that particular pastor, who is a Japanese man married to an American woman, they have been serving together in Japan for a long time and have grandkids. In addition to their three churches, some of their congregants have expressed a desire for an English language service, as a number of them are English teachers from the Philippines and Jamaica. The church agreed to give it a try, expecting a handful of people to show up. Instead more than 20 people came, and they’ve been doing it ever since. Problem is, English speaking preachers are rare in Tochigi prefecture. One of our missionary friends asked if we could help out one week, so we gladly did.

It was such an encouragement to visit this congregation, these are people that, while far from their earthly homes, are living in faith that their heavenly Father will sustain them. We hope to go again sometime if the need arises again!

On our way home, we decided to make a trip out of it, and stop by a local hot spring town for an overnight. The town is called ‘Kinugawa Onsen’ or ‘angry ogre hot springs’. Personally I think Hugo gives their angry ogre a run for his money. 🙂
