One of the things we try to do as missionaries in Japan is create community, and help people feel at home in church. Sometimes, especially with the severe shortage of pastors, and among them the shortage of adequate salaries, the emphasis in serving at church compared to enjoying church life together, can be out of balance, so we try to do these types of fun outings. I think the point here is that church people can be more refreshed, and that church people can be more free to invite friends if they think that church is a good life community (as friends often need this type of incentive to give church a try, even before they are at a point where they will listen to the gospel). So a few weeks ago we went hiking! Technically we went caving, in Tokyo’s biggest (only?) tourist friendly limestone cave. Being an old Lord of the Rings fan, I love caving, and it was also nice to enjoy time with church friends who also enjoy getting out and seeing nature. We have another trip planned, and hopefully this group will continue and be something that gives refreshment, and an easy invite to friends of church people as well!
